The Mother
My fan fiction is going to take the viewpoint of Ted Mosby's wife from How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM). In the last episode of the latest season of HIMYM, we get given the face of the future mother, the one that has been sought after by Ted, and millions of fans for years.
The entire show is based on Future Ted in the year 2030, telling his two teenage children how he met their mother. The show is always spoken from future Ted's point of view (with the exception of a few episodes from Robin or Barney's point of view), as he recollects on the years, relationships and heartbreaks that lead him to meeting 'The One'. I have decided to create a fan fiction that spans over five years, from the viewpoint of the mother. It will be written in diary form, as she also reflects on the years, relationships and heartbreak that lead her to meeting Ted Mosby.
Every diary entry will be written from different days, over five years. With the final entry being the day she meets Ted (in 2013, at Robin and Barney's wedding). This is so we can understand her character and history, over five years. Each diary entry will be around 200 words, to make up the word count.
18th March, 2008- This is the day after the mother, whose name will be Cristin, attended the same St Patricks Day party as Ted (episode: No Tomorrow). In that particular episode, Ted picks up Cristin's bright yellow umbrella, a meaningful object that she has had all her life. The yellow umbrella is seen throughout the entire show, sometimes showing that the wife was right behind Ted, or just across the street. This diary entry will have Cristin reflecting on the night, and it will show her own desire to be with someone and settle down.

18th May, 2009- As we know, Ted's wife is currently studying for her Economics degree at Columbia University. In an episode in the 2009 season (The Leap), Ted is offered a job to be a lecturer at Columbia university for Architecture. At the end of the episode, after he has delivered his class, he is informed that he got the wrong room, and was actually in an Economics class, future Ted states that "your mother was in that class". So this entry will be Cristin's reflection of her first day at university, the encounter she had with Ted and how funny she found it.

11th January, 2010- "Girls versus Suits" is the episode that involves Ted breaking up with Cindy, a girl who also attends Columbia university. When he goes over to see her, he starts complimenting her on some of the objects she has in her apartment, which Cindy explains belong to her room mate. They broke up, and just before Ted leaves he catches a glimpse of the room mate's leg sneaking into her bedroom after a shower. At the end of the episode it is revealed by future Ted, that Cindy's room mate is his children's mother. This entry will focus on a break-up Cristin is going through, it will express her belief that this man- Stephan, is the love her life (similar to Ted's views on Robin, for most of the show).

30th November, 2012- There is no particular episode related to this diary entry, as we do not see or hear much about the mother during this season. The only new aspect about her that is introduced, is that she is dating a man called Louis, at least up until April 2013, so this entry will be her writing about her relationship with him, but it will reflect doubts about him being the right one for her. It will also include the detail that she has joined a wedding band as the bassist- a point that leads her band to being the entertainment at Robin and Barney's wedding, when she meets Ted

20 August, 2013-The final entry will be after the mother has returned from the wedding, and met Ted at the train station (Farhampton). It will express the connection she felt for him right away, and give reference to the end of her and Louis' relationship. The end will be left open, as we do not know entirely how they meet, and what they say, but this entry will be the seed of love that will eventually grow into marriage.

Oh dear
ReplyDeleteperhaps your entry is in draft mode.
I have taken it out of draft mode so others can see and comment
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an interesting idea. I think it's a cool idea to do it in diary form too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great Idea, it is quite hard to stick to the word count though i find when writing in pieces. However I think you've kept a really easy cohesive story to follow! I like the Idea alot. It's so much easier to write from a persons perspective, and have it in a diary form. I'm not familiar with the show much, but i have seen that last episode you mentioned, the roomate one. Im intrigued to know about her... cos I know the premise of the show.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of writing this story using diary entrys or episodes is not something I would've thought of and I am interested to see how you will write this. good luck :)
ReplyDeleteI am not too familiar with the show but I think that it's a great idea. I think it's also interesting to write in as diary entries since there's not many books (or pieces of writing) out there that's written in that format. Good luck :)
