FINDING NEO

Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world? - Morpheus, The Matrix (1999)

EPISODE 1: False Idols

That's another one dead, how much more can we take? Cypher is sitting at the ships control center, another mission failed. He thought Morpheus was a hard task master, or was it that he thought him a man of dreams. A dreamer who put too much hope in one man, one man to save us all? One man to free us from the machines, defeat the sentinels and beat the Agents, how could one person achieve all this? "The One", bullshit, its ridiculous. He was sick of it, but he better keep it to himself he thought. Morpheus was a god among men here, the beacon of hope, or was he just the king of dreams?

Morpheus: Cypher, un-jack me, we lost him. Such a pity it is... I had so much hope for this one. I truly believed.

Cypher sneered, "you can't win em all Morph, we tried, he lasted longer than the previous one's, what happened?".

Cypher un-jacked Morpheus, opening his eyes, he looked around, he looked around the safety of his ship he was back in "the real world", he turned to see the lifeless body of the man in the chair next to him, another "One" gone, another hope lost.

Morpheus: What else? Agents. Too many of them, they moved much too fast, we couldn't hold them off... they're getting stronger. He's riddled with bullets... I wanted to help him, I just kept hoping....

Cypher: What? What did you think he could do Morpheus? Dodge bullets? That's impossible, this whole damn thing is IMPOSSIBLE!

Morpheus: Cypher, please. Un-jack him and let us put him to rest. I know you're losing hope, but it is not the way. We must believe in the One, he is out there, I know it. Now let us gather, I have news of a new recruit. There is still hope, and she's waiting for us.

She? It had been a long time since Cypher had been in the company of a woman, the day he agreed to leave the Matrix, to be unplugged, the promise of "freedom" sounded good... power also sounded good. It wasn't until a year went by that Cypher truly missed what he had in the other world... sometimes he wondered if he was really free at all.

Cypher: Well, here's hoping we don't kill her too.

EPISODE 2: The Holy Trinity

Morpheus gathers his crew and begins to explain the next mission. An associate upon another ship has received information of a computer programmer within the Matrix. Who, like many of Morpheus's other crew members, appears to be a skilled network hacker. This leads him to believe this person may be close to uncovering information about the matrix itself.

Morpheus: My friends, as we mourn the loss of our comrade I pray that you do not lose hope, we knew this would prove difficult and that sacrifices would be made. I pray that you continue to believe in the one and trust in me as I do you.

Apoc: Morpheus, we support you. We know the dangers, the hardships of the war, and we have all lost something but we know it is only because we are to gain so much more.

Morpheus: Thank you Apoc. Now, I have received news from The Logos that there exists a hacker within the Matrix who has come of some prominence. We believe she is on the brink of discovering its true nature and it is in our best interests to liberate her before the Agents discover her whereabouts.

Mouse: She? It's a girl? We're getting a girl??

Apoc (rolling his eyes) : Don't get too excited, I just cleaned this place.

Cypher: When was the last time you saw a woman Mouse? Your mama?

Mouse: As a matter of fact, no. Hey Morph, I just finished writing our best training program yet.

Apoc: Finally, you've been cuddling up with that thing for over a year now.

Mouse: Hey, shut up! Well it's finally finished, and it's gonna be incredible. You gotta see her... she's beautiful.

Morpheus: Very good Mouse, I look forward to simulating it. Apoc, prepare to load the matrix, Cypher and I will be entering shortly to meet Switch.

*

As Morpheus and Cypher materialize within the matrix, they are greeted by a striking blonde woman dressed in white. Switch from aboard The Logos, they enter a parked black car and Switch begins to drive, relaying information about their next destination.

Switch: Her name is Cassandra,  wanted by Federal Investigation for hacking the Internal Revenue Services data base. Once in, she initiated a search of specific names. First name on her list: Morpheus.

Morpheus: I see, and what else does she know?

Switch: I don't know, her server was cut before the search was complete. Morpheus... do you think she knows?

Morpheus: Yes.

Cypher:  She's a smart one. I like 'em smart!

Switch: We need to hurry, The Logos reported Agent activity 20 minutes ago.

Cypher: Oh shit.

Morpheus: Indeed.

The trio speed through the city streets they are being trailed by a another black car with tinted windows, a man in a suit and dark glasses leans out of the passenger window and begins to shoot, firing rapidly at the car ahead of them.

Switch begins to swerve, left and right weaving in and out of traffic as the Agents close in on them. Cypher leans out of the window and opens fire on the car.

An Agent climbs out of the passenger window, and leaps from the car bonnet landing on the roof of the speeding car. As he plunges his fist through the metal roof, Morpheus grabs his wrist and pulls the agent completely through and breaks his neck. He turns and pulls a Machine Gun from his cloak,
and shatters the rear window of the vehicle firing at the Agents' car obliterating the windscreen and spraying bullets into the body of the remaining Agent. The car loses control and skids off the road.

Switch: That was close.

Cypher: No shit!

As they make their way through a complex of executive apartments, Cypher notes how extravagant the area is, and with a gleam of envy in his eye remarks: "Nice, what you gotta be, a millionaire to live here?",  Switch, clearly- unimpressed states, "She works for the Deuteronomy Group", "Hmf, Lawyers... figures".

Switch: We're here,  level 16, room 1213.

Morpheus: Lets hope she's expecting us.

*

As the group enter her apartment they are greeted by a a slender fair skinned woman, dressed in black, Cassandra Mary-Teresa, Computer Programmer turned Lawyer. Gifted, intelligent and a well known ball breaker, she worked her way up the corporate ladder over the course of ten years proving herself a formidable force within the world of Law. Women feared her, Men wanted to be her, She however, believed there was more for her than this. On the eve of her promotion she left everything behind, cutting ties with everyone she knew. With short hair and refined features, she spoke with a soft but stern tone, to which Morpheus responded with calm and ease.

Cassandra: Can I help you?

Morpheus: Yes. I believe you have been looking for me, Cassandra.

Cassandra: You know who I am?

Switch: Yes, we know you were born here, never married, parents deceased. Started your life as a proficient computer programmer but chose to craft an impressive career in Law, most peculiarly you left your job  6 months ago for seemingly no reason at all. You've managed to keep a low profile. Until a few days ago you tried to break into the IRS' database and now find yourself on the F.I's list of most wanted cyber criminals, did you know that?

Cassandra: Okay, so you've been spying on me... what are you Central Intelligence? Or let me guess Federal Investigation? Whatever it is why don't you arrest me and get this over with, or shall I sit down and we can discuss my childhood as well?

Morpheus: That won't be necessary, and we are neither of these. What we really want to know is what you know.

Cassandra: and what exactly do I know?

Cypher: How about you tell us why you quit your job... by the looks of it you were doing pretty good.

Cassandra: They wanted to make me partner and from there,  government. I would have been groomed to make Solicitor General. I never really wanted this job but I was good at it. I've grown to hate the systems corruption and lies. I made a career out of defending conglomerate criminals, It didn't feel right. I had been searching for an excuse, a way out... the night before my promotion I had a dream.

Morpheus: and what did you see?

Cassandra: My parents were devout, but i've never believed in god, or at least I didn't.  In the dream I met God, he told me I was lost and that when I found him I would be free, I felt it was a sign.

Morpheus: It was just a dream, i'm sure you've had many before... why now why this dream?

Cassandra: It didn't end there. After we spoke I woke up, only I wasn't here... I was there except I don't know where there was. There were buildings, like this one but different, they glowed, like a pulsating city of light and it was dark. There were these things, like monsters... and suddenly my eyes closed and I was here, I was awake.

When I woke up it was as if I had been awake the whole time. I could still feel it on my skin, it felt real like I had just been there. I've never forgotten it, and ever since then I've felt that i'm not really here. For the last 6 months I've devoted myself to a life of spirituality, in search of meaning.

Morpheus: Machines. The monsters you saw in your dream, they were machines.

Cassandra: Yes. They were machines... how did you know.

Morpheus: Because it wasn't a dream, I believe it was reality.

Cassandra: What do you mean? It can't be reality... they were like robots, and the glowing lights... they were like pods, how could that be real?

Morpheus: What you saw was a glimpse of our world.

Cassandra: Your world?

Morpheus: The real world. You've seen it haven't you? The world inside your dreams, you've been back there in your mind trying to understand it. I'm here to help you... understand it.

Cassandra: You're Morpheus aren't you? I didn't think you were real. I've been, trying to find you.

Morpheus: That may be... but I think, it is not I whom fuels your search more so than it is what.

What are you looking for?

What is it that drives you?

What do you truly want to know?

"God he's good", Cypher whispers to Switch and Morpheus takes this as his cue to introduce themselves properly. "I'd like you to meet Cypher, and this is Switch. It is her who has been spying on you, but I assure you it was necessary, and I indeed, am Morpheus, and I'm going to tell you the truth".

Cassandra thought this couldn't possibly be happening to her. This was Morpheus, and if he was real then the questions she had must be real too... the things she had seen, in her dreams. Could they truly be real also?

Cassandra: The truth? You're telling me that what I've seen is real.

Morpheus: Yes.

Cassandra: If what I saw in my dream was your world then...  where am I?

Morpheus: At this very moment you exist as a projection of your physical self. Our bodies exist on Earth but not as you know it. The entire world around you is nothing more than an illusion of what used to be real. What you see here, what you feel, what you believe, is a lie. Right now, we and everyone else around us are plugged into a network, a system, essentially wiring us here to this place, a prison for your mind.

Cassandra: the Matrix.

Morpheus: Thats right.

Cassandra: What is it?

Morpheus: A highly advanced computer simulation that mimics the real world as it was at the peak of civilisation. It is designed to sedate the human mind and make it believe it is a real, living, breathing human being. I appear to you now as a representation of my self within the Matrix, the difference is I exist within the confines of my ship and may come and go as I please. You however, are a slave, dormant among others supplying energy.

Cassandra: Energy for what?

Morpheus: The Machines.

Cassandra: They're real?

Morpheus: Yes. What you experienced is known as a Blur. It is extremely rare, it occurs when your body has awoken momentarily within its bounds, and has glimpsed the world around you. We believe it is the human mind trying to fight back.

Cassandra: Alright, lets cut to the chase, how do I get out?

Morpheus: With my help.

You have a choice. I offer you the Red Pill and release your mind from this world and bring you into the true world. Or you take the Blue Pill, wake up, resume your life wasting your skills with nothing but a distant memory of this encounter. Forever wondering what it is in the back of your mind telling you there's something not right about the dream you're living in.

Cassandra: If I take the Red Pill, what happens to me?

Morpheus: The pill is a tracing program that disrupts the carrier signal of your mind, sending commands that force your incubator to go offline, you wake up and my hover craft will retrieve you.

Cassandra: Will I ever be able to come back to this place?

Morpheus: Yes, but not as you were before. You'll be better, stronger, ... free. Now Cassandra, which do you choose?

Cassandra: I choose freedom.

As Cassandra swallows the red pill  the room begins to twist and morph out of shape distorting  the images of everything around her. As the world begins to grow distant she closes her eyes and darkness fills the void, silence fills the air and she hears nothing but her own thoughts. Unaware of where she might be, the sound of her own voice whispers, "Open your eyes". Her eyes shoot open as if she were waking from a bad dream, her eyes sting, her skin is bare. A mechanical sound reverberates through the air. She sits up from her pod, cables protruding from her arms, her back, the base of her skull.

The air around her is frigid, frightened she can do nothing but stare out among the sea of human pods, like a field of red crops.

*

Mouse: She's awake.

Morpheus: Track her signal, she will be flushed any moment now.

Apoc: There, she's in the high rise complex. The Power Plant.

Cypher: Lets get over there before it's too late!

Apoc: Not yet, she should be entering the waste system any second.

Mouse: There!

Apoc manoeuvres the hover craft over a pit of pipes, as Cassandra's body falls from a waste pipe the Nebuchadnezzar lowers a mechanical arm and grabs her body and retracts into the ship.

three days pass within the ships infirmary, Cassandra's body lays in an incubation chamber slowly rebuilding her muscles. Cypher is fascinated by the woman before him. Slender with skin like porcelain, something told him that he knew if he could touch her, he might never see his hand again, Apoc tends to her gently.

Cypher: Did it take me this long to rebuild?

Apoc: It took you much longer.

Cypher: God she's beautiful, don't you think?

Apoc: She's special.

Cypher: What do you think Morpheus has planned for her?

Mouse entered the room, "he's going to take her through the training program of course. I bet she's good".

Morpheus: Yes, she is. She doesn't know it yet but she's going to be one of our finest assets. She will prove integral in finding The One, we won't be able to do it without her. Yes, She told me she would be special.

Mouse: Morpheus... now that she's free, what are we going to call her?

Morpheus: Trinity.

I know why you're here, Neo. I know what you've been doing... You're looking for him. I know because I was once looking for the same thing. And when he found me, he told me I wasn't really looking for him. I was looking for an answer. It's the question that drives us, Neo. It's the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did.

EPISODE 3: The Oracle

A month had passed since Trinity had been freed she adjusted well to her new life and she grew fond of her new family and to Morpheus himself. She had proven to be skilled in many ways, a strong decision maker, a fierce leader, and her mastery over combat was so far unmatched except by Morpheus himself. The crew had never seen anything like it, and Morpheus began to sense great things. The time had come for her to see The Oracle.

Trinity wondered what the Oracle was about. Did she really have the power to predict the future? She couldn't help but wonder what She might have to tell her. As they arrived at the Oracle's home she also couldn't help wonder what the hell she was doing here. Morpheus enters the room, The Oracle moves towards him, greeting him with a hug.

The Oracle: Ah Morpheus, it's been a long time. Would you like a candy?

Morpheus: Oracle, it's good to see you. No thank you.

The Oracle: You're not happy. What's the matter?

Morpheus: You mean you don't know?

The Oracle: Of course I know, I can still ask can't I? Are you sure? It's a lemon drop, delicious.

Morpheus: Oracle, excuse my impatience but-

The Oracle: I know, I know. You want to know if you're ever going to find The One. Ahhh, Morpheus. You bear the weight of the world on your shoulders.

Morpheus: Not the world, Zion is counting on me.

The Oracle: Zion has waited this long, they can wait a little more… You're going to find The One, Morpheus. You've always been the one to find him.

Morpheus: I thought I had, he passed the tests but the fight proved more difficult than anticipated. I wanted to help him but it was too late, now he's gone.

The Oracle: He wasn't The One.

Morpheus: How will I know?

The Oracle: Well, there is no way to know for sure... you must believe.

The Oracle pressed her hand to Morpheus' cheek and with a loving smile she assured him.

Morpheus: Now, I have someone I'd like you to meet.

The Oracle: Yes, send her in.

The Oracle casts Morpheus a knowing look as he departs the room. Trinity entered and looked around sceptically, the Oracle appeared to be an African American woman in her late 60's, she could have been your typical grandmother who lived next door and she kept a plate of cookies on the kitchen table, freshly baked.

The Oracle: Hello Trinity. Not all quite what you imagined am I? Please, have a seat. You must have a lot of questions, they always do.

Trinity: Will Morpheus really find The One?

The Oracle: Oh yes, yes he will.

Trinity: How do you know?

The Oracle: It's my job to know... You won't believe me, but he's going to be the love of your life.

Trinity shifted uncomfortably from her seat, cynically, she asked the Oracle: “is it going to be hard?”

The Oracle: Oh yes, most definitely. But remember, you have a choice.

Trinity: to fight?

The Oracle: to fall in love.

Trinity fell silent; the Oracle exchanges a tender smile with her and she leaves the room. Outside Morpheus and Cypher are waiting, curiously Cypher asks: “what did she tell you?”

Trinity: She told me what I needed to hear.

As Morpheus motions for them to leave Cypher questions where they are going next, to which Morpheus simply replies, "Home".

EPISODE 4: Zion

Deep beneath the Earth, away from the decimation of the surface, close to the core, thrives Zion. The last human city. The people of Zion revered Morpheus as a bringer of hope and a strong leader of the Resistance. It had been months since Morpheus left on his journey and he had left many behind.

Niobe: Where the hell do you think you've been? Look at you.

Morpheus: I'm aware I appear a little worse for wear, I'm OK truly. It's not the first time. It was the first time without you however...

Niobe: and it's the last time!

Morpheus: you're leaving the Nebuchadnezzar?

Niobe: yes, and that's not all i'm leaving.

Morpheus: Niobe...

Niobe: don't, you could have gotten yourself killed out there, you already lost another potential. This... obsession with the one, Morpheus... when does it end?

Morpheus: It ends when I find the one, Niobe I thought you understood.

Niobe: Oh I understand Morpheus, I understand that this... mission, this DESTINY of yours is all you can think about.

Niobe changed her tone, she didn't want to hurt Morpheus but it was hurting her more knowing she was losing the man she loved, fighting for something she wasn't sure she believed in.

Niobe: Morpheus, look at me. I love you but I don't wanna be on that ship watching you die for a man who may or may not exist.

Morpheus: We could all die Niobe, you know that. We're in the middle of a war. We're fighting for freedom, for Zion. The Oracle told me...

Niobe: I know what The Oracle told you, but I won't do this any more. Commander Lock has asked me to pilot The Logos, and I've agreed. I'm going to do it.

Morpheus: As you wish. Far be it for me to stop you, you have served my cause and I failed to realise I have not been serving you. Does this mean I'm going to lose you?

Niobe: It means you're going to have to find a new first mate, and I know she better be as good as I was.

Morpheus: She will be just fine.

Morpheus and Niobe share a tender embrace and kiss, with all her love Niobe let go of him knowing the man she loved was fighting for what he believed in and at the same time sacrificing what he loved the most, her.

Niobe: Now, you better go, your people are waiting for you.
*

Morpheus:

Zion! These past months have not been easy, I wont lie to you. The war grows harder everyday and we have lost another member of our resistance. He was strong and he was loved by many and we will remember him for his dedication to our freedom.

Although we risk much, we will continue to free those we can, and whom want to be free!

You all know of the prophecy which I have been told and the search for the One grows dangerous but I promise you I will do everything within my power to do what I have been told to do.

I will not rest until I find the One, I will not fail you.

Not long after Morpheus delivered his speech, he is approached by two brothers, of Zion. Both compelled by his words, and inspired to join his ship.

Tank: Captain Morpheus, I am Tank and It would be an honour sir, if we may serve on your ship. I am fluent in code and a skilled program operator and my brother Dozer can fly almost anything.

Dozer: My technique in rebuilding has also proven to be efficient.

Tank: and if I may say so, I am your biggest fan.

Morpheus: Men it would be my honour to have you aboard my ship, I only ask that you prepare your loved ones for a long departure. You may never see them again.

As Morpheus heads towards his home... a familiar voice sounds behind him, he turns to see Switch, who had been awaiting his arrival.

Switch: Morpheus, I too would like to join The Nebuchadnezzar  I have spoken with Captain Niobe and she has agreed to let me depart.

Morpheus: Switch, I would be delighted to have you aboard. Trinity will undoubtedly benefit from your company also.

Switch, Apoc, Dozer, Trinity, Mouse.

Tank, Cypher, Dozer, Trinity.

  1. I really like this Daniel, is there more to come? I think the only thing I can comment on is the amount of words used- which I understand is hard because you have put so much thought in to this. I love the use of dialogue, and you have found very nice and relevant pictures to go with the story. It is very descriptive, and easy to read which is great for people who do not know the story. Well done!

    1. Thanks Amy-Claire, I would have liked to have been able to develop the end/5th Chapter a bit more, But I haven't had the time recently. So In theory yes there should be something to round off the end a bit, and a couple pictures. But I don't think I'll have time to do it before tonights deadline unless I neglect some other work (which has been neglected enough). Also given the word count i feel I may have to *pause* there.

Thanks, Im glad it worked out for you as a reader because I was trying to make it easy enough to follow for someone who also wasn't familiar with the matrix as well. My aim was to captivate a new audience who might want to see where the rest of the story goes (therefore would watch the movies)as well as entertain previous fans like myself, who might enjoy this spin on the other characters. I like it in general :) I wish it wasn't so epic though haha.
